CITY AIRPORT TITLE CLEARED AND . PLANS GO FORWARD IN ESTABLISH-O MENT OF INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTCONSTRUCTION OF BUILDINGS SCHEDULED TO START SOON WITH $60,000 FUNDS AVAILABLE; WILL BE OPERATED UNDiER LEASE.With the clearing of the title to the 364.8 acres of the land purchased by the City of Laredo from the owners for the sum of $22,344.35, and the passage of a resolution by the ci,ty council at its meeting last Tuesday night authorizing Mayor Albert Martin to pay the stipulatedamount for the land by the issuance of the proper warrants, Laredo has disposed of the preliminaries to the establishment of an airport that will cost approximately $85,000, including the land and improvements tobe made thereon.It was recently announced from Washington that it was the intention of the postoffice department to make the proposed airport an international airport, or the second of its kind in the country, the other being at San Francisco. The establishment of the international airport would call for an additional expenditure for improvements, probably bringing the total amount to over $100,000.The airport site purchased by the city '■ .. ..'.2 .V-of Laredo is located about five miles northeast from the. center of Laredo, adjoining the tract of the Laredo Plantations, Inc., on the north. According to the plans to be made by Jack Beretta of San Antonio, head of the San Antonio Chapter of the National Aeronautical Association and an eminent airport architect, the Laredo municipal airport on which work of construction of buildings; etc., is expected to start within a short time now that title to the land lias been cleared, will be one of the best in j the country. The . Department oi Com* ppierce, which controls the air transport ,$Bmess, in approving the plans of j Mr. Beretta and Mayor Albert Martin for the proposed airport, classed it A-1-A,” according to Mr. Beretta.There are #60,000 available for the airport, in addition to the sum of $22,-344,35 paid for the site, the cost of this land being quite costly due to its cltesencss to the city ; and the Laredo-San Antonio paved highway, with which the airport will be connected by a paved highway a distance of less c than two miles to the westward!Plans agreed to by the city of Laredo and Consulting Engineer Beretta call for the leasing of. the airport site to some firm (and there are several applications already in hand) who will build and operate the airport.The plans prepared by Beretta call for an aerial passenger and controlbuilding which will house mail, customsand. express departments; will have awaiting room 20x30 feet, with wingsof three rooms, each running at right angles. Customs clearance on international traffic will be made there, Beretta states, until the Mexican government installs satisfactory facilities on the south side of the Rio Grande at Nuevo Laredo, Mexico,Other buildings proposed to be erected on the airport site include an airdrome with 100*f6ot doorway, with 18 feet vertical clearance, taking care of the largest heayier-than-air craft. There will be double runways for planes, in-.a * . * -i ! * ••versecting at right angles,, and another* t •'**.- *approaching the intersection from runways at 45 degree angles. The plans also include a clubhouse and restaurant, these to be of Spahish architecture. Infact if present plans are fully carried. f «out the proposed Laredo airport will be second to none in the country.In addition to the $22,344.35pended by the city of Laredo in purchase of the airport site, for which it now holds the deed, the city has spent $2,-700 in providing lights and other essentials for the provisional field for theiairmail service established October 1 last on the United States army aviationfield just northeast of the city. Operation of airmail planes from and to that field will continue until the Laredo airport is ready for business, which should be some time during the early part of 1929, as Engineer Beretta is now in communication with several Eastern firms who are willing to takeover the lease of the airport and make the necessary improvements thereon.ex-
