A special venire has been summoned to appear , in the court on Monday, morning, from which the selection of a jury will begin. Herrera will be represented at the trial by Pope, Pope be Valdez, while the prosecution of the case will be conducted by District Attorney John A. Vails.The killing of Bob’7 Rumsey, one\Zof the best known and most fearless inspectors in the customs service, by a party of five liquor smugglers just west of the town of Torr.ecilios, thirty miles east of Laredo, on the forenoon of August 19, 1922, proved the sensational news of the time throughout the entire country.Rumsey and two other customs inspectors, Frank Smith and Will Mus-graves, were returning from Torrecillos, where they had made a big liquor capture the night before, and the other inspectors, with the cargo of liquor in their cars riding ahead, encountered a party of' five Mexican smugglers in .the roadway. As Smith and Musgraves passed the smugglets, and being without their rifles, which were in the car with Rumsey, they signalled Rumsey to stop the car, Rumsey placed his car across the roadway and had just alighted ahead of the approaching car when the smugglers opened fire, Rumsey falling dead by the side of his car. One of the smugglers then ran to Rumsey’s body, dispossessed him of his revolver, jumped in the car and dashed into .the cha-i »* ,md parral .with the other members of his ivill party.Nothwithstanding a diligent searche tithe 1onra-toLa-ichriyisral*keikeavehasinthe! ISoftheal-tior made for days for the murderers of the 6C customs inspector, no trace of them were iat found, as they had • safely crossed the Rio Grande, About two years later theman who had taken Rumsey’s revolver was killed on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, and soon after another of the quintet of smugglers met a violent death in Mexico. Joaquin Herrera, the third man, and who is charged with having fired the shot that killed Bob Rumsey, was arrested near Roma early in September by Starr county officials and brought to Laredo, where he is held in jail. The fourth man of the quintet, charged with the killing, Jose Casanova, was arrested in Houston recently by federal officers and is now in the county jail. Only one of the men of the party of five remains at large, and he is said to be in Mexico.In view of the fact that the dead in-spector was one of the most popular and best inspector in the customs service at Laredo and had done valiant work in the apprehension of some of. themost dangerous criminals that had in-. . * ..»»* ... , fested the frontier, the cold-bloodedmurder in August, 1922, caused much excitement, and it is expected that the trial of the case beginning in district court here next Monday morning will attract a capacity crowd to the courtroom.
