FEDERAL OFFICERS ACTIVEIN SEQUOYAH COUNTYDeputy U. S. Marshal George Ritter and Special Enforcement Officer Joe Morgan have' been very active lately in raiding stills and making a drive against bootleggers In this county. Last week they destroyed five moonshine outfits in one raid, andin a raid in the vicinity of Liberty,in Board Hollow, locate^ in the north-cast part of the county, last Friday night, they captured a large still in ■operation, seven gallons of whiskey and five hundred gallons of mash. The still was being operated as the federal officers approached, accompanied byDeputy Sheriff Campbell Bellers, and* • 1six men were about the still when theT- ,officers made the dash from cover inan attempt to Capture them. Four of them beat the officers to the brush.after a race during which several shots were exchanged, and two remained at the still and were arrested.The men arrested at the still were Claud and Watie Jeremiah, brothers, and later, the other four Then camein to this city, by agreement, and were■ • »arrested by Marshal -Ritter. All- six %ere arraigned before U. S. Commissioner James Breedlove, Tuesday afternoon, and as Alendar Blaylock; one of those who escaped during the raid, made the statement that he wasm athe sole owner of the still and that theother men arrested wee only “sweaters,” he1 was held for the federal grandt •tjury under $500 bond *and the five sweaters” released by Commissioner • Breedlove. The men released were the4tmmJeremiah brothers, Jim Duty,, Red Sagely and John McClellen, all of whom lived in the neighborhood where the still was being operated. The, stillcaptured was of the favorite-j tank kind of 110 gallon capacity, witha 50 gallon barrel cap and a copperworm. ' *•s1 Officers Ritter and Morgan alsomade a flying trip to Gore, in the■ mwest end of this county, Monday, and brought in two brothers, Ervine and Henry Smallwood, who were placed’ in the county jail charge with possession of moonshine whiskey. The Small-woods were captured at their home on the Carlile farm near Gore, and one■igallon of whiskey was taken from their home by the arresting officers, and a jug of booze was broken by one of the brothers before the officerscould prevent it, as the arrest was being made. Marshal Ritter stated that complaints have been coming into his office from Gore that. whiskey was being consistently peddled in and around that town, and that the Small-9 _ 1 lt;•-- ' j wood brothers were tipped as being the parties actively engaged in the business, which caused the raid on their home in a search for their supply of moonshine.The hearing of their case was before• iCommissioner Breedlove, Wednesday,■and they were held under bond for investigation by the federal grand jury.
