Sunday’s concert was specially charming and the repetition of num bers heard in previous seasons ser ved in an interesting way to show what progress has been made. Where all was good, particular men tion may be made of the Jarnfelt Prelude—a most beautiful little com position which suggests windy spring skies and water meadows and is no less ingeniously written than it is full of inspiration. It is the kind of piece that reveals none of its great difficulties when proper ly played, and yesterday’s render ing was simply perfect. Of the “Hansel and Gretel’s selections it may be said that the more often one hears them the more one wishes to hear them again. Nothing has been written to touch this opera in all music since Wagner. The orchestra brought out all the colour and spirit of the music with rare skill, the pianissimo of all instruments in the dream part was particularly good and the Witch’s Ride could hardly have been bettered. It is much to be wished that this beautiful opera could be revived again at the Lyceum. Mr. Morscher, Mr. Millies and Mr. Brandt were at their best in the trio for harp, violin and ’cello. It might be called a model of good style in playing and the audience would gladly have heard more. Weber, Grieg Liszt and Sibelius went to make up a delightful after noon’s music.
