Rhodes, charged with larceny, was begun this morning before Judge Hichelberger in district court. Rhodes stole three chickens from a residence in the east end and later he confessed to Chief Gray and took the chief to the place from which the chickens were stolen. Attorney B. W. Scott is defending the prisoner and County Attorney Cornell is conduct ing the prosecution. Services for the late Wm. H. Wil cox, the young South Side business man who died Sunday night, were con ducted at the Willard Street Metho dist Episcopal church this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by the pastor, Rev. E. J. Shook. A large congregation filled the church to honor the memory of their departed friend. The Pickwick lodge of Odd Fellows, of which the de ceased was a member, attended the funeral in a body. A talkative negro who was arrest ed Sunday night by Captain Gallagher may land in the penitentiary as a re sult of his conversational abilities. He told Captain Gallagher that his name is Henry Beckford, that he was ar rested for rape in Van Buren county three years ago, feigned insanity and was sent to the poor farm, and then escaped. Chief Gray yesterday wired the Van Buren county sheriff to come for the man. Beckford might have es caped with a light vagrancy sentence had he been less loquacious.
