Though Sardou’s play is not, strictly speaking, a tragedy, its central character requires a tragedienne for its interpretation ; and sinceher impersonation of Fddora at the Hay market in 1883 Mrs. Berna; i-Beere has been recognized as the only actress on the English stage gifted with the passionate power called for in the third and fourth acts of “La Tosca.” These acts, by the way, will not, as has been rumoured, undergo any stantial change, though one piece of barbaric realism will be removed the famous torture scene.
