C10/lrvine World NewsSportsNov. 21, 2002By Larry ShieldFor Irvine World NewsWoodbridge High's football team squandered a 20-point halftime lead Friday night and fell to Aliso Niguel, 30-20, in the Sea View League finale at Aliso Niguel.Woodbridge (1-9, 0-5) had a 20-point lead at half-time.Leading 20-6 in the third quarter, the Warriors had a chance to extend their lead when they advanced the ball to the Aliso Niguel 7-yard line. But an offensive pass interference penalty negated a third touchdown pass from Tim Kegel to Ron Rommelfanger.We were up, 20-6, and then the roof caved in, said Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson. After they scored the touchdown in the third quarter, we responded by scoring but then had it called back because of a penalty.After that, they seemed to gain new life.The key play came when Dominic Ruiz scored a touchdown on a reverse pass from Nolan Hammon in the fourth quarter to help Aliso Niguel (4-6, 2-3) take the lead.Woodbridge jumped out to a 7-0 lead when quarterback Tim Kegel connected with Rommelfanger on a 12-yard touchdown pass. The Warriors extended their lead to 14-0 when Kegel scored on a 12-yard touchdown run.Woodbridge made it 20-0 when Kegel hit Rommelfanger on a 4-yard touchdown run. The Warriors missed the kick.Dan Oermann was Woodbridge's leading rusher with 176 yards on 33 carries. Oermann wound up with 1,103 yards rushing on 181 carries, becoming the first Woodbridge player since Shane Harris in 1999 to rush for more than 1,000 yards.It's a great honor for Dan and the offensive line, Gibson said.
