Hundreds Honor Oyer At DinnerMr. and Mrs. Cyrus Qyer are shown at the dinner last Friday night.Friends from near and far, old friends and new friends gathered at LaGrange Inn last Friday night to pay tribute to Cyrus L, Qyer for more than 32 years of service as principal of Babylon High School.Present and former members of the Board of Education, faculty and students attended the Testimonial dinner at which Mr. Qyer was presented with a miniature golf cart, a “Traveler’s check” for a long-deserved vacation and a handsome leather bound scrapbook containing the hundreds of notes and messages from those who could not be present.Mrs. Qyer was presented with a corsage and a handsome gold schoolhouse charm by members of the Board of Education.Included among the congratulatory letters was one from U. S. Commissioner of Education Harold Howe n who stated, “On behalf of President Johnson, I am happy to express our warmest appreciation to you for your dedicated service to the public schools of New York as teacher, principal and educational leader”.Other messages of appreciation were received from: Governor Rockefeller; New York State Commissioner of Education James E. Allen Jr.; Associate Commissioner Walter Crew son; J. Wade Bingeman, executive secretary of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools;District Superintendent Gordon A. Wheaton of the Third Supervisory District; fellow members of the Planning Committee of the New York State Association of Secondary School Administrators; and a thoughtful note from the Skinner twins, Doug and Don, from aboard the U. S. S, Pande-mus.Rev. Norman 0. Edwards, former pastor of the Babylon Method)' st Church, served as toastmaster and master of ceremonies and introduced for formal remarks District Principal Gerald A, Anderson, Mayor Sid Ask-off, Congressman James R„ Grover Jr., former District Principal Percy Proctor, High School Principal John A, Stack and Mrs. Fred Van Bourgondien, president of the Board of Education.“I am indebted to so many people,” Mr. Oyer remarked, “not only for tonight - but for making my life in this community a very happy one - to Percy Proctor, Gerry Anderson and John Stack, the administrative staff of Babylon High School, the secretaries, the custodians, the cafeteria crew, the Lions Club, the poker group, the district principals, the parent-teachers group, the students, the village officials, and to all my friends and neighbors who have been so wonderful.”One of the highlights of the evening was when Mr, Qyer reminisced about some of the many student occasions that came to mind during his years as principal. “I remember the noon dances, the Assemblies, coaching the cheerleaders, the donkey basketball games, the Tulip Festival and coaching the baseball team among so many others.“If credit is due me for any accomplishment,” Mr. Qyer said appreciatively, * this credit must be shared with the person who has been by my side with love and understanding since we were married one week before I came to Babylon - my wife, Virginia,“HI never forget this evening,” said Mr. Qyer. “Where-ever I am, whatever I do, I’ll always be a Babylonian and IT1 continue to root and cheer for Babylon High School . ”
