Construction On Four New Schools To Start In 10 DaysBy GLADYS BARRILEAUXNews-Tribune Staff WriterConstruction work on four new schools and additions to a fifth one will begin within the next 10 days, school officials announced today.The contract for $59,980 worth of additions to Bolivar Elementary School was signed Thursday with the Adolph Johnson Contracting firm of Galveston,CONTRACTS for construction of new buildings for Rosenbergand San Jacinto Elementary, the Robert and Mamie Weis Junior High and Sam Houston Junior High were signed Friday with the P. G. Bell Construction Co. of Houston.The Bell firm won the new school construction contracts on ^ combined hid of $4,195,660.Both agreements stipulate that construction will begin within 10 days after, t h e contracts are signed. Dr. Morgan Evans, superintendent, said.EXPANDED facilities at theBolivar School will include three additional classrooms, administrative offices, rest rooms and covered walkways connecting the new structure with the existing school.The new building for Rosenberg Elementary will be constructed across the street frlt;vn the present building at 11th ai%J Ave. H on the Adoue Park site. The present school building, built and given to the schools by Galveston Philanthropist Henry Rosenberg, will be used as aplayground area and a new site for Adoue Park under a city-school district land swap.SCHOOL ADMINISTRATIVEofficials have chosen the new building at Rosenberg to be carpeted in a $25,000 experimental study of floor coverings.The board last Wednesday reversed its p r e v i o u s action against carpeting all four new schools and approved carpeting for one of the two new elementary buildings Board members have been debating for several months the merits of carpets in new school construction as an economical and educational advantage which would pay for itself in five years in reduction of maintenance and operating costs of vinyl floor coverings.THE NEW San Jacinto School will be built across the street from the present building at 20th and Ave. K. The old structure will be demolished and the site used for a school playground.The Robert and Mamie Weis Junior High will serve the west end of the city in the Island City Homes area. The new junior high will be built with funds bequeathed to the schools from the Mamie B Weis and Lalah B Arstein estates.A SECOND new junior high, named Sqm Houston Junior High will he constructed between Avenue N and N'Va at 41st and 43rd St reelsThe four new schools will be air-conditioned.Work on the Bolivar School will take 120 calendar days. The Bell Construction firm has set 300 calendar days to build.THE CONTRACTS call for theBolivar School project to take 120 calendar days, the San Jacinto, Rosenberg and Weis jobs. 300 calendar days and the Sam Houston school. 360 days.The new additions to Bolivar School are expected to be in use at mid-term in January, while the four new schools are expected to open nexl September.
