San Sabans Nail Hornet Team, 15*14,IIn Thrill-Loaded Football FinaleNhIn a whingding battle fraught with more frantic moments than a countdown at Cape Canaveral, San Saba’s quiek hitting Armadillos prevailed over the Gatesville Hornets, 15-14, as the *58 curtain came down at Holmes Stadium last Friday night.The San Sabans carved themsel ves a portion of District 17*AA’s second place and relegated the Hornets to the No. 4 spot.The contest oozed with excite-j ment—long runs, nifty passes, fumbles, intercepted passes, daring strategy. The heat was on both clubs all the way.Quarterback Larry Walker quicksilvery San Saba slicker, was the lad who plunged the skewer through Hornet hopes. His darting runs and accurate passing kept Gatesville off balance throughout the evening.The touchdowns came in pairs: two in the first quarter and two in the third period. The Hornets scored the last one. gambled for two points on a running attempt on the conversion, and didn’t make it. That was absolutely all the difference between the two clubs.Gitftsviil* Scores Firstville's ten. and the Armadillos had a total net yardage of 223 to Gatesville’s 217. The Hortiets would have held a decided edge in the latter department, however, had their passers not been tossed for more than 50 yards in losses, white failing to get their bombs away.The turf had been softened by Thursday and Friday rains, and the ball was slick. Both teams handled it like it was salved with shortening. San Saba lost the ball five times on fumbles, but the Hornets returned the favor four times.Jimmy Eden, San Saba’s big left tackle, was kingpin in the victor’s line. On the second play from scrimmage Halfback Wendell Byrom whirled around San Saba’s right end and galloped 44 yards to the Armadillo 24 before being caught from behind. The San Sabans stalled the Hornets there, but Byrom’s long run still turned out to be touchdown setter-upper after all as four plays later, Walker fumbled a fourth-down punt attempt and the Hornets took possession on the Armadillo 17.Six plays later Byrom burrowed through the line for three yards and the night’s first teedee. Fullback Bob Edwards made a sensational spear of Jimmy Hardie’s pass for the two point conversion and it was 8-0.San Saba tied it up two minutes later as Walker buckled down. He first passed to Halfback Dean Taff! for 17 yards, then faked a throw and sliced through Gatesville’s left end for 37 yards and a first down on the Hornet 2. Halfback Martin Long drove across from there.On the all-important extra-point try. Walker’s jump pass was incomplete. But a Gatesville defender had lined up offside, so the the Hornets were penalized to the 1-yard line and San Saba presented another chance. Top scorers were Charles Billman of Moody with 24 points and Charles Graham of Gatesville with 13.Despite a 21-point performance from Miss Judy Howell, the Hor-nettes bowed to the Moody lassies, 51-39. Gatesville was leading at halftime, 22-17.In the B team game, the Hornets emerged on top, 46-22. Hector drove up the middle for five yards, then Walker shot a 10-yard pass to Long. After Long had gained two more at the middle, Walker busted through the left side for three yards and San Saba’s go-ahead tally. Taff kicked the extra point.Three plays following the San Saba kick-off Byron McClellan, the Hornets’ sparkling sophomore halfback. engineered the night’s masterpiece. Taking a quick pitchout, McClellan evaded two San Saba tacklers behind the scrimmage line, then charged down the west sidelines when afforded some daylight by Jackie Terrell’s fine blocking. At the San Saba 30 he faked the Armadillo safetyman out of his hip pads, and sped on across untouched. The run covered 69 yards.Quarterback Joe Carothers was spilled on an attempt to circle right end for the extra point, and from there on in San Saba guard* ed its 1-point lead like it was a uranium deposit.The Hornets tried in vain to crank up their vaunted passing game, a weapon used to pull previous close ones out of the fire this year. But this time Wendell Byrom, rated one of the league’s finest throwers, found himself without a friend as he tried to launch his aerial shots.
