A Sad EventLast Saturday, November 7, a little before 5.30 p.m., John Dunne, aged 12, only child of P.c. Maurice and Mrs Dunne, was drowned in the Parsons Gully dam, Southern Cross. It seems that young Dunne and another boy named Gummow went into the dam for a swim. It is believed that he could not swim. Young Gummow missed his mats, and quickly gave the alarm to a man who was passing. This man sent the boy to the tennis grounds for assistance, and dived in, but owing to the discoloured state of the water and the lack of any indications, the task of recovering the lad proved difficult. Messrs Hankin (t':e Postmaster), F. Walsh (Mining Registrar), E. P. Mackay, and Stuckey were playing tennis close by, and, on being told of the happening, they ran to the dam, and promptly started to make a search. After about half an hour. Mr Hankin found the body in about 6ft. of water, and on getting it to the surface immediately started rendering first aid, which was of no avail. Dr. O’Meara arrived, and exerted esrery effort to restore animation, but after three hours’ work allhope was abandoned, and the bodywas taken to Mr Dunne’s residence in Mr Sprunt’s motor car, which was in waiting. A sad feature of the fatality was that when P.c. Dunne saw the crowd around the dam and ran to see what was wrong, he was not aware that it was his only child that had been drowned, until he turned the body over. Deceased was a very bright and well-mannered hoy, and in addition to showing marked ability at music and singing, he had a voice of great promise. On Sunday night’s express the body was taken to Perth, and despite the hour beinglate, and the night both dark andwet, the school children and a large number of adults marched behind the remains to the station. Mrs Dunne was so upset over her great loss that she remained with her sister in Perth after the burial of the boy at Karrakatta. The deceased was an altar boy at Southern Cross, and a great favourite. Our sympathy is extended to the bereaved parents.R.I.P.
