Thursday in conversation we heard the story of the loss of shin Hanover on Pond Island which occurred over thirty years ago. An old gentleman who was an eye witness told the story and mighty interesting it was. The ship Hanover with, a crew of sixteen men with a cargo of salt was bound from Cadiz for Bath. In a heavy gale at the mouth of the river, the ship attempted to get into Parker’s Head harbor, h ailing in this she tacked and stood out to sea hoping to make New Meadows lliver. The ship struck 011 Pond Island bar and immediately foundered. The waves wore small mountains, the narrator said, and the crew were swept away like flies. This happened Friday noon, and Sunday eleven bodies were recovered, which were buried in the sand on the point near Morse’s Itiver.
