as if they contained one word of argument calling for serious answer (for that they do not), but shallcontent ourselves with showing our readers what itis in the Times that the Watchman deems so worthyof close imitation.Of Dr. M orison in particular, (a man who needs no eulogy from us,) the Watchmans beau-ideal ofa journalist thus speaks,** This contraband soulmonger—this waspish creature--this illiterate person—a very shallow .professor—oily traducer— this angry sectarian preacher—this enterprising merchant—this wrathful reprover—this loose and liberal practitioner—this * President of the Trevor Chapel of* UcaUh.* ’*Dr. Morison’s character, writings, and connections, are spoken of in such terms as these : —•* Burlesqued with a Doctor’s degree—hypocrisy—slippery—his testyandsupercjliousletter^nstyle'OfmortlfiM'lgho'rtvnce antFin • solence apologetic cant—either with consummate ignorance orconsummate effrontery—mighty airs—this may be all very giilpableIn the meridian of Knightsbridge—the 200J, or 300J. a-year which he picks up—conventicle—contraband—his own beloved dispensary —the quackery wherewith our spiritual hygeist is endeavouring to puff off his 1 Morison’s pills'—the’ spiritual health of those who statedly give their custom to his party meeting-house.”The worthy Doctor’s brethren in the ministry are honoured with such epithets as these:—“ Ptous academicians—cloaked adventurers—those restless quack preachers—your political Dissenting zealots who are endeavouring to embroil the country with religious feuds—these hotbed striplings—raw and unqualified novices—voluntary purveyors wholly uneducated—never received an hour’s professional education either at a superficial academy, or any where else—illiterate—canting professions and unctuous physiognomy—everlasting cant—vile andvenal ambition—the demand for their nostrums—the most impudent and exaggerated statements—there is scarcely a . more contemptible knot of agitators that we could deign to put our heetupon,**As for the churches of which these are the ministers, they are styled “ nurseries of democracy,” and represented as consisting of pious potboys” and “ regenerated* dressmakers.”Now, when the Watchman shall have sufficiently admired these pet/phrases of his pet journal, we will beg him to reflect that they bear with at least as much weight upon his masters, as upon that class of Chiistian ministers for whom they were more especially designed. We observe that the writer has silently exempted the Conference preachers from his most honourable abuse.. Twice he enumerates the sects which enjoy the distinction of his ribald displeasure. First he says,“The chapels belonging to the various Dissenting bodies of Arlans, Southcottites, Swedenborgians, Socinians, Freethinkers, Owenites, Muggletonians, Irvingites, Quakers, Baptists, and Independents, may justly be designated # irregular.* *VThen he speaks with similar contempt of .u The chapels of the Southcottites, Swedenborgians, Muggleto-nian8, Irvingites, Quakers, Ranters, ami Anabaptists/*But in neither of these lists is there any mention of Wesleyan*Methodist Chapels. In vain, however, were they omitted; for all that the Times has said is just as applicable to them as to the rest. Nay, without knowing it, this pink of perfection in the Watchman9s esteem, has happened to stumble against its masters in his inebriate fury. He animadverts upon what he designates “ the Shoreditch University,” the “ meagrecurriculunt of the Hoxton school,” and 44 the broad satire upon education given at Holton school,” quite unprepared to find his animadversions perfectly well founded ; not, however, as respects Dr. Mo bison and his brethren, but as respects the candidates for Wesleyan-Methodist “ conventicles.” The writer seems not to he awarelt; i i , » • -that “ the Shoreditch University” is now the seat of a Methodist facul ty; and yet, rhen he talks of the ‘meagre curriculum of the Hoxton school,” and of “the broad satire upon education” there given, one might almost believe, not only that he was cognizant of the fact, but also that he had heard, that, at th( late public examination, at which Dr. Bunting presided, and Mr. Hannah officiated, tone of the alumni could demonstrate the first problen in the first book of Euclid !
