A MS A Preventive Health ProgramIn an effort to stimulate and encourage students to recognize and work with the concepts of preventive medicine and health main-tc nance, the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) will provide financial support in grants up to $1,500 to a limited number of medical student projects working with patient education and community outreach. Ihese student projects offer students a concrete way to evaluate their foie in the delivery of health care. These student projects, which arc sponsored by A MS A through a contract it recently received with the Bureau of Health Education. Center for Disease Control, arc a part of AMSA’s Preventive Medicine Project which recognizes the need to activate mcdic«d education to develop conceptsand skills of preventive medicine throughout the educational process. Although the projects arc primarily available to medical students, the participation of interdisciplinary groups is strongly encouraged in these projects. The Preventive Medicine Project will provide support to student projects in two areas: Patient Education - Support is available to students who want to develop and present to other students a program which discusses the role and impact of patient education in the delivery of health care services. Such a program can complement the existing curriculum by giving students a forum to explore such issues as why is patient education important; what is the impact of prevention on health; whatarc the responsibilities of the physician and other providers in patient education and prevention; and how can the patient/con consumer become a more active a n d knowledgeable participant in preserving his/her own health and welfare.Community Outreach in Health Education - Support is available to students whorecognize the need to workwith the concepts of patient education and social andpreventive medicine in the community setting. Community outreach does not just include presenting health education about particular problems and illnesses to consumers/patients; it alsoallows both students and the community to share and learn from each other about health problems and health maintenance. health and supportive resources, and problems and motivations in seeking health care services. While support is available to student projects in either of these two areas. A MS A strongly encourages students to consider developing a project which includes both the presentation of a program 011 patient education to other students and the practical experience of working with what is discussed in such a program in community outreach.Students interested in applying for a project grant in either or both patient education and community outreach should contact Cathy Stcpanek at the American Medical Student Association.14lt;K) Hicks Road.
