FIVE FEUDISTS ARE CONVICTEDClay County Clan Members Held Guilty and Three Draw 21 YearsA dispatch from London, Laurel county jays that what is hoped to be the final act’ in the Fcrman-Poe-Baker feud of Clay county was staged in the Laurel circuit court this week when five feudists were sentenced by. Judge Wm. Lewis to terms ranging from two to 21 years in the state penitentiary. Those sentenced were:John Ferman, 21 years; Wm. Poe 21 years; Leonard Morgan 21 years; Felix Fenpan 5 years and Steve Ferman 2 years. These five men, with Hugh and Robert Baker, were indicted for killing Deputy ShciifF James Baker in a battle on Crane creek in Clay county, last March, the culmination of trouble growing out of a quarrel about moon shining. Baker, a grandson of George Baker, killed 20 years ago by Jim Howard, of Goebel case fame, invaded the hostile Crane creek territory to make arrests and the clans gathered and joined battle, killing Baker and, it is alleged, wounding others.Nearly a dozen indictments were returned but the cases were transferred to Laurel county to obtain an unprejudiced jury and to prevent a possible feudal outbreak if trials were held at Manchester, county seat bf Clay county. At the May term of iho Laurel circuit court, Robe it and Hugh Baker were sentenced to five years each. The present trial lias lasted more than a week and has been a typical feud trial, more than 100 witnesses having been summoned and a maze of conflicting evidence given.Another Clay county case was begun that of jfahn Eversolc and Geo. Alex Bush, jointly indicted in Clay county on a charge of killing fiom ambush Joe McCollum on Crane creek in last July. McCollum was a prominent farmer, who, it is charged knew somo damaging evidence against parties suspected of being responsible for lib* death. Though this is not a feud case, there are many old-time feud sympa-thizers connected with both sides and every precaution is used by authorities to prevent fuithcr trouble. Deputy sheriffs search every person who enters the court room for weapons and extra deputies ace kept on the . public square and the principal th6r-c ugh fares, at all times.
