RETIRING COMMISSIONER RECOMMENDS CHANGES FOR COMMERCIAL BUREAMr. Watson Griffin, IndustrialCommissioner of Brandon, has ad*dressed the following letter to Mr. J. W. G. Watson, president of the Commercial Bureau:*iii accordance with my letter of resignation handed to you some months ago, 1 shall leave Brandon on the 1st of December. As the time of my departure is near at hand 1 wish to thank you and your eolleagues on the Comnjercial Bureau executivecommittee for your kind co-operation during the period of my stay in Brandon . From first to last there lias been a spirit of harmony and good will exhibited at the committee meetings. The members of the executive committee have given the most careful consideration to every question that lias come before them. The deliberations have often lasted for threehours at a time, each member expressing his opinion, but there has never been an unkind word uttered to my recollection.I have been impressed with thepublic spirit of the members of this committee who have freely devoted their time to the service of the city. Not only have most of the members faithfully attended the committee meetings when in the city, but you and other members have always been ready to give up your time to discuss matterg with me between meetings.I do not think the citizens in general realize how* much they owe to the committee who have during the past two years succeeded in making Brandon known in eastern Canada, the United States and England as it was never knowm before. I can say without hesitation after a trip to Eastern Cauada that Brandon is nowr very fa vorably regarded there and I believe this is very largely due to the wrork of the Commercial Bureau.I am leaving the city, and have no personal interests to serve, but I am strongly of the opinion that the citizens of Brandon should support the Commercial Bfireau in asking the city council to continue the financial arrangements which have enabled the executive committee to carry oc the work.It may be that owing to the finan eial stringency it will be impossible lor the city council to vote as large a grant for the coming year a? dur ing tlie past year, but I may point out that if the Commercial Bureau were relieved of the burden of contri buting to objects outside the regular line of publicity work the expenses of the Bureau might be greatly reduced About one third of the grant receiv elt;l from the city council was expenc ed in taking care of matters that dc not usually come within the scope of publicity work and which in other cities are paid for directly by thehe to obliged to travel through country vtolting outside boards trade, as he must occasionally do, I may point out that Miss Mary Quarrie, who has been my stotnt ever since I came to Bran* is exceedingly capable and tr worthy. She to thoroughly acqua ed with Commercial Bureau wq understands the running of the lt;ce and is enthusiastically in teres fn the work. Indeed, I may say tl if every citizen believed as thorou ly in Brandon as Miss McQuar does the city would double in popt tion in a very short time. One important branch of Comm cial Bureau w*ork that cannot be drlt; ped is the Brandon Imperial Hoj Re-union secretaryship. 1 have be secretary and trustee of this orga zation but Miss McQuarrie has ti en charge of all the detail work. S is thoroughly familiar with every flt; ture of it and I think she should e tainly be appointed secretary a trustee of the Imperial Home I union association if she is willing accept the office. By giving Miss N Quarrie full responsibility Mr Kii would be relieved of any bother ai be able to devote his attention € tirely to the duties of commission of the Commercial Bureau and seci tary of the iMiddle West Federate Boards of Trade. There can be i ioubt whatever that Miss McQuarr :s fully capable of taking entire cha lt;ze of this work and no one in ti world is more absolutely trustwo thy. In addition to this she could a sist Mr. King in the general work lt;he Commercial Bureau continuin lie same duties that she has s aithfully and enthusiastically pe ormed during the past year unde my direction.I repeat that I have not consulte dr. Clarence King and cannot sa vhether he would be willing to ui iertake the double duties I have ou ined but if he is willing to do so elieve it would be the most satis actory arrangement which the cit ould make under present conditions dr. King is thoroughly acquaintei /itli the city and the surroundinj ourttry. His experience as a news aper man would be of great value think that newspaper experience i ilmost essential to successful put icity work. The offices we now occupy were fit ad up at some expense with the un lerstanding that the Commercial Bu aau the Brandon Imperial Home Re nion association and the Middh Vest Federated Boards of Tradlt;I ould be together. They are ven uitable for the accommodation o .hese organizations; the location ii central and known to almost everi one in Brandon. In rpfprpnno tn tho met nf r»arrv
