NECRO KILLS FIVEArrest Inevitable, He Sets Fire to His Home and is Burned With ItEdgar Robinson, sheriff of Okmulgee county; Henry KIaberr-a policeman, and two negro bovs named Chapman, were shot and killed in Okmulgee last Sunday afternoon by Newton Decker, a negro. Richard Farr, chief of police, and Henry Schatt were wounded by bullets from Deck er’s rifle.Decker started a fight by beating an Indian boy. Jas. Grayson, into insensibility with a revolver. The fight took place at the Frisco station. Grayson’s friends went to the police and when Klaber arrived Decker ran to hi9 house on a small creek nearby and barricaded himself. Klaber was shot when he approached the house.Two negro boys named Chapman who tried to approach Decker and induce him to surrender were shot and killed. Their father was wounded as he was lifting the body of one of his sons. Steven Grayson was also shot while trying to talk Decker into surrender. Sheriff Robinson was called by telephone and was killed -while trying to arrest Decker.In the. mean time pecker’s house had been riddled by bullets. Failing to drive him out, the gathering citizens, now a frenzied mob, set fire to a house just north of Decker’s. Decker, desperately wounded, was seen to roll over on the floor, light a match and set fire to his own house. /It was soon a mass of flames and his body was burned in it ^Hundreds of shots were fifed by Decker and the officers and it is said ten persons were slightly wounded besides those whose names are known. Decker ovi* dentlyhad a large quantity of ammunition “ y~‘as many cartridges werefieaid to explode while the house was burning.Sheriff Robinson and Policeman Klaber both had families. Decker was employed in a gun shop and was considered peaceable and well behaved.Ben Aultman who returned from Okmulgee Tuesday, where he had been on business, states that the report of a race war at that place is unfounded He brought a piece of the skull of Decker back with him and said the body was burned to a crisp.
