SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov. 18 ®—The California athletic com mission Monday banned heavy weight Tommy ‘Hurricane’ Jackson from fighting again in a California ring in the wake of a tremendous beating he took last week from Eddie Machen in San Francisco. Dr. Dan O. Kilroy, commission chairman, and a physician, said ‘he will undoubtedly cause in jury to himself of a serious na ture were he to continue boxing as he did the other night.’ Machen defeated Jackson de cisivly in their 12-round match in San Francisco that ended with a 10th round TKO. ‘Human Punching Bag’ The commission's action is ef fective only in California but Kil roy said “We will request the National Boxing association likewise retire Hurricane Jack son.” Jackson demonstrated “little, if any, ability to defend him self’ in the Machen fight, Kil roy said. He termed the fighter “in essence, a human punching bag.” Kilroy said that Dr. Emilio Lastreto, commission physician in San Francisco, examined Jackson both before and after the fight and recommended that Jackson should be permanently retired. Referee Agrees In a letter to Kilroy, referee Frank Carter said Jackson dem onstrated no ability in the fight. He recommended that his license be revoked. Kilroy noted that the commis sion actin bars Jackson from lower class fights as well as the major matches but he said: “Eventually he'd catch some of the hungry boys who are on their way up who would kill him.” teamers can improve enough to give them some help. I feel that we will have only an average team this year and definitely not one of championship qual ity.” Enid retains a fourth letter man in the person of B-9 Bob Burdick. Up from the B team are 6-1 Danny Edwards, 5-9 John Manning, 6-4 Kenneth Holtzen and 5-9 Tommy Lansden. Douglass, not eligible for the conference title a year ago, be gins its first official Mid-State basketball campaign with three players who saw considerable starting duty last season. They are 6-2 Richard Bradford, 6-1 James Roberson and 6-0 Maurice Holloway. Trojans 19-9 Last Year Fonzell Wilson, a 6-1 performer who started as a sophomore but saw only limited duty last sea son, is expected to round back into shape. The Trojans, a powerful re bounding team last year, may be hurting in that department this season. Expected to press for starting positions are center Clarence Watkins (6-3), forward Melvin, Dean(6-1) and guards Tyrone Davis (5-7) and Edward Evans (5-9). Douglass compiled a 19-9 rec ord during the 1956-57 season and posted a 6-2 mark against Mid-State foes which would have earned the team a share of the title with Shawnee, had it been a league member, Jerrell Chesney who led Ana darko to its best season (21-7) in years last winter takes over as Shawnee coach. He replaces the veteran Deward Jameson who has been elevated to junior high principal at Shawnee, Shawnee Schedule Tough Chesney inherits three players who were full-fledged starters on the in-and-out club which notched a 16-10 record while playing prob ably the toughest schedule in the state. The Wolves again tackle a murderous 20-game card. The Shawnee veterans are 5-11 Don Brewington who averaged 10.3 last season, 6-4 Gene Lau derdale who averaged 5.4 and 6-3 Larry Dibler who averaged 5.0. Part-time regular Anthony Rolette, a 5-11 guard, appears in line for a starting berth. Other players fitting into Ches ney’s plans are 60 Charlie Nail, 6-1 Gene Mathis and 6-3 Ray mond Bradford. Capital Hill coach John Smith faces an almost complete re building job with no starters and only one letterman returning from a team which won 12 and lost 13. The holdover is 6-5 sen ior Bill Minton who saw such limited action that he got in only 10 varsity games and scored 11 points. New Coach at Northwest Smith plans to play mostly juniors and sophomores this sea son to build for the future. Pros pects include senior Kenneth Naughton (6-2), juniors Don Wal ton (5-9), Ronnie Pinkerton (6-1) and Kent Osteen (6-0) and sopho mores C. B. Speegle III (5-10) and Tom Tawkington (6-0). Northwest is in much the same plight as Capitol Hill with new coach Don Van Pool obtaining the services of only three of last season's top 13 players. Defensive ace Jim Smelser, a 6-0 guard, returns from the start ing unit, while 5-11 Jim Daniel and 5-10 Richard Glasgow are holdover reserves. Smelser scored 181 points for a 6.5 aver age as the Knights won 15 of 28 games. Additional help is expected from 6-4 Jim Hester and 5-7 Joe Leake, both seniors, and a pair of sophomores up from Northwest's city championship freshman team of a year ago, 6-2 Lynn Loveless and 6-2 Tom Ward.
