OYSTER BAY, N. Y., Nov. 16— ‘P—Death today held the secret of why “Alfred Grouard,” a wo man, masqueraded for 14 years as a male butler and chef in the household of Joseph M. Sears, re tired millionaire publisher. Fifteen fellow servants, kept at a distance by Alfred’s air of aus terity, failed to pierce the decep tion. Alfred, tall, about 55 and weigh ing 180 pounds, was regarded as a “perfect servant.” In 13 years she never had asked for a day off. Her true sex was discovered af ter her death yesterday in a lodg ing house to which she moved after her health began to fail last February. She had refused medical atten tion until her death.
