Two of the entertainment world’s finest supper club —— will be reunited during the P ial “An Evening with Mable Mercer, Short, and Friends,” to be broadcast on channel 24, cable channel 2, on Monday at 8 p.m. This hour of nostalgia and music brings together these vocalists for the first time since it critically acclaimed Town Hall concerts. The setting is an intimate private party to which the celebrated singers have invited friends. Around the twin pianos, the party guests include composer Alec Wilder and songwriters Bart Howard and William Roy, along with singer Dene Mustin and writer George Frazier, who also hosts the program. Miss Mercer pays tribute to her composer guests, by singing a song by each of them, written especially for her. Among those selections are ‘‘Fly Me to the Moon,” “Let Me Love You,” and “Maggie.” A major Cole Porter segment of the program includes selections from his musicals, ‘“‘Jubilee,’’ “Red Hot and Blue,” and “Silk Stockings.” Bobby Short will also sing selections from the music of Vernon Duke and Ira Gershwin, Jerone Kern and Dorothy Fields, and Billy Strathorn and Duke Ellington. Along with the offerings of Mercer and Short, there is much reminiscing about favorite songs and composers. Dave Garroway has said of Mable Mercer that ‘‘Not to have heard her is to be a little poorer in life.’’ Of Bobby Short, Rex Reed said, “Night after night the cultured and wise sit catatronically in ecstasy, listening to his songs like children in school.’ Together, these two sensitive performers give to all of us a memorable experience. Alec Wilder is an outstanderican composer of chamber works, film scores and a caged songs, and is also author of a recently published book, ‘‘American Popular Song: The Great Innovators, 1900- 1950. ’ Composer-arranger Bart Howard's _— of song credits include ‘Fly Me to the Moon” and ‘‘Let Me Love You.”’ He was an early accompanist for Miss Mercer from the time of her arrival in the United States in 1938. William Roy composed the music for the Broadway musical ‘‘Maggie,” and later was music director for producer Julius Monk. Club singer Dene Mustin has a devout following wherever she appears from Boston to Jamaica. George Frazier, for years entertainment editor of Life magazine, now writes for Esquire, as well as a weekly column for the Boston Globe. “An Evening with Mabel Mercer, Bobby Short, and Friends”’ is a production of the South Carolina Educational Television Network and is transmitted nationally by the Public Broadcasting Service.
