Trains His Dog for Police DulyWhen the .Royal Canadian Mounted Police conducted a refresher course for the force's valuable tracking dogs in Yorkton, Sask., recently, a Bowmanville boy, Constable Stanley J. Gatch* ell, son of Mrs. Cecil Gatchell, 18 Carlysle Ave., was one of the trainers present.Stationed at Sydney, N.S., Cst. Gatchell transported his dog “Tiny/* half way across the continent for additional training. Tiny is one of the 20 ponce service dogs stationed at strategic points throughout Canada.In the mfein, dogs are employed in searching for lost persons, tracking criminals, locating lost or missing articles, and guarding persons and property. In certain cases, dogs specialize in locating stills and caches of illicitliquor. Approximately 18 years ago, the first successful case where a police service dog was employed gave birth to this most important section of the force.I / Chosen A DogmasterBecause he was very fond of animals, Cst. Gatchell jumped at the chance to become a dogmast-er, last September, a short two years after being admitted to the ranks of the red-coated Mounties. According to information received, dogmasters are selected from volunteer serving members of the Force who successfully complete dogmaster training and tests.
