R. JOHN W. WILDE, coach of Ohio State University’s football teams, is paid a fine tribute this week by H. G. Salsinger, sports edi tor of the Detroit News, and one of the best known sports’ writers in the United States. Salsinger says in part: “When the time arrives for awarding belated honors in athletics, Dr. John W. Wilce of Ohio State University will head our list of candidates. He is our first choice. “Here is a man who, without question, is one of the best football coaches in the western hemisphere, but a man for whom the ballyhoo has rarely labored. “Dr. Wilce has contributed much to football and while he has never been given the credit due him he has continued along his chosen lines, delivered the best he could with the material at hand and taken the criti cisms without flinching. “The result of this public atti tude would have beaten down a man of less courage. Ohio State winning the Western Conference ti tle in 1916 and 1917, lost the cham pionship by a fluke touchdown in 1915 and returned to the throne again in 1940. Since that time Ohio has been unable to repeat although threatening run several years.” On this, the Detroit expert has this to say: “All they know is that Ohio State has not won a Western Con ference title since 1020 and what they want is someone that can pro duce a Western Conference cham pion. They do not understand just why Ohio State has not won another Big Yen title. They probably would not cure to understand it. “Michigan has not won an Undisputed Big Ten champion ship since 1902. In 1903 and 1904 Michigan and Minnesota tied for the title; in 1922 Michigan tied with Iowa. In 1923 she tied with IYIlinois and last year Northwestern disputed her claim to Big Ten crown. In the meantime Dr. Wilce has pro duced three undisputed champ ionship teams. The fact that Michigan has not had an undis puted title since 1902 caused no one to demand the removal of Fielding fWarris Yost, but down in Columbus they hold oes meetings to have the good doctor kicked all several times each year.” “Ohio State, coached by Dr. Wire, smothered the Michigan forward passing attack last sea son and this year Ohio State did to Michigan whist no other team was been able to do to the Wolveines in two years’ Ohio State scored two touchdowns.” “We hope that one of these days the doctor receives some of the credit long due hin”? “Dr. Wilce has taught his teams to play clean football,” Salsinger goes on to say. “He has been, at all times, a sportsman first and a coach second. He was thed to instill these pu.nciples into his players. At times one of them may violate the code but if the doctor hears about it the player is in for trouble. Last year one of his linemen, a fellow that has given him trouble, slapped Benny Friedman. Unfortunately for the lneman Dr. Wilce happened to see him slap Friedman. Before an other pley was called the lineman was off the bench with the doctor in action at his side. “Attending a dinner last winter the doctor was called on for a speech. The toastmaster indicated to the guests that Wilce would probably tell them how Ohio State happened to lose a certain game. “As the doctor arose the guests settled back to hear an oily alibi, such as Tootball coaches often live. The doctor gave them no shock when he explaimed: “The resch was simple. The team was better coached that guts and they played better football. “That is the doctor all over. He is that Firg of a anun. “He lay done much for Ohio State with a great deal for football. Also, he has written the best book on football that has yet been print ed.
