It waked everybody, and many thought it was an earthquake. In a few minutes the fire bell rang, and the cry ol‘ firo at Short’s mill was heard. One of the five large boilers hud burst and almost, utterly destroyed tl-e plant. One of the doxies was blown into the dry kiln heater and hurst the piping uni one side of the house asunder.Each of the five boilers was displaced and damaged, the smoke stacks torn into shreds, and thewhoie eid* of the mil! wrecked. Pieces of heavy pipe vrere blown ahundred Yards, and the mau-uole«lt; 1plaU was shot to a gre .t height and descended upon the residence of Mr E. S S £5tnons, tearing through the top ami the second lloor and lodging on the first door. Many windows were broken. The iron missile fellwithin four feet of the bed on which Mr. Simmons and wife were sleeping. Many brick bats, pieces of iron ami ■cantling were buried several hundred vards. The watchman and fireman were standing- near the boilers when the explosion took pTee, bu we i ot killed.
