In Memorlam.Another honored and prominent pioneer of Wapello county is gone, Fii-aa Kitterman died Nov. 14th, after a lingering illness of almost a year. Mr. Kitterman was born in Franklin county, Virginia, Sept. 10, 1804. He was a son of Henry and Anna Kitterman, ol Pennsylvania. His father died in Franklin county, Ya., and soon after his mother moved to Perry county, Indiana, where she opened up a large farm and with the aid of her sons anu such other help as she was able to command, she carried on until her death.In 1841 he came to Princeton, 111., where he spent the winter and in the spring of ’43 came to Wapello county, Iowa, arriving here May 10. He camped near the Mineral Springs, at the east end of Ottumwa with the Indians six weeks. Inthe meautine he reconDoitered the surrounding country and finally located in Dahlonega township, about 8*4 miles northeast of Ottumwa, where he bought and unproved two good farms; in addition to this he has given away over 400 acres to his children, and at the time of his death cwned an acre of land on North Court street with two good houses, one of which was his residence until a few weeks before hisdeath. .He was a man of great energy, and was the last known survivor of those who took part in the Dahlonega war.He was a fair scholar, constant reader p. and always kept posted in the current events of the day. Having lost his father early in his youth he had to rely mainly on his own exertions for meins to kaep him in school. When we look back seventy or seventy-five years and call to mind the almost total absence ofschools.it is surprising that lie attained the advancement that he did.In his school days the rude log cabin, slab benches, etc., were tli • educational facilities to which he was invited, but energy ana resolution clt; ijiiered all obstacles, and lie was 0 among the few .vho received a fair *)» -ucation.
