Lack seventy or seventy-live years and call to mind the almost total absence of schools, it is surprising that he attained the advancement that he did. Jn his school days the rude log cabin, slab benches, etc., were th • educational facilities to which he was invited, but energy and resolution conquered all obstacles, and be was one among the few .vho received a fair education.He had traveled a great deal- been in almost every state in the union— made two trips to the east, twice overland to California and several times to the western states and territories, all since he located in Wapello county.His first wife was Sarah Archibald; she died in 1831. They had two chil dren. One son, William died at the age of 48; and one daughter still living now, Mrs Martin Koontz, of Santa Fe Springs, Col. Mr. Kitterman’s second wife was Lvdia Redmond; she died in March, 187(5; left four children, Sarah, now Mrs. Alfred Jiowlin, and Nancy, now Mrs. Jefferson Thompson, both of Highland Center, Iowa; George W., of Ottumwa, and John II., of Cawker City, Kansas, Mr. Kitter-man, at the time of his death, and tor years before was a member of the Christian church.' His dealings with all were upright and honorable.and his honesty of character were questioned by no one. In 18(54 he .. oved to Ottumwa, where he resided until the death of his late wife, which occurred Aug. 28. 1888. She was Miss Kate Cooper, and was born near Lima, 111. They were united in marriage, Oct. lb 187SThus lie lived an honest, upright life, and died a Christian gentleman. Ilis loss will be deeply felt by Ins friends and the community. Ilis remains were follow -d to their last resting place m the Kitterman cemetery by a large concourse of mourning friends.
