By Dave Rogers The News staff writer NEDERLAND - The Ned erland Lady Bulldogs count ed their chickens before they hatched Thursday afternoon. The hosts for Nederland’s Lady Bulldog Classic girls’ basketball tournament found themselves leading perennial powerhouse Kountze by nine points, 37-28, after three quar ters of their first-round matchup at Bulldog Gym. Kountze battled back for a 54-51 win in overtime. “We were coasting. I was fix ing to sit down and relax,” coach Jeff Smith confessed. “But our turnovers down the stretch kept them in it, and in overtime, we just couldn’t put it in. “We haven’t gotten used to winning. It’s a new concept at Nederland. Kountze has been in those situations. We haven’t been in too many of them.” Rebecca Mosley led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 points and Ha Nguyen added 10. The Lionettes outscored Nederland 6-3 in the overtime period and will move on to face Hamshire-Fannett, a 71-22 winner over Vidor in a 2:30 p.m. game today. Nederland takes on Vidor at 11:30 a.m. and the winner of that game plays Anahuac at 5:30 p.m. this evening. Besides Kountze and Hamshire-Fannett, other first day winners included Lum berton, Kirbyville, West Or ange-Stark and Silsbee. Hamshire-Fannett was led by 20 points from Memri Carmon, 13 from Kindra Wright, 12 Cheyenne Craigen and 10 from Macy Howerton. Lumberton downed Kelly 77-45 behind 24 points from Chelsea Pickering and 16 by Courtney Wilson. WO-S, the tourney’s de fending champion, took a 79-36 win over Anahuac, getting 26 points from Brittany Scott and 15 more by Janae Hendreson. WO-S and Lumberton ad vanced to Saturday’s semifi nals. WO-S will take on the winner of today’s 2:30 p.m. game between Hamshire-Fan nett and Kountze. Lamberton will take on the winner of to day’s 1 p.m. game between Silsbee and Kirbyville. Silsbee knocked off Little Cypress-Mauriceville 71-44 and Kirbyville was a 68-26 winner over Nederland’s JV. Kirbyville and the Neder land JV get things started this morning with a 10 a.m. game. The tournament wraps up Saturday with the champi onship game scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Houston Christian re bounds vs. PNG PORT NECHES — Prac tice made perfect for Houston Christian at the Indian Classic Thursday at Port Neches. After falling 79-44 to Beau mont Open in the tourna ment’s opener, the Mustangs came back four hours later for a come-from-behind 74-67 win over host Port Neches-Groves. PNG, now 1-1, led 55-52 entering the fourth quarter, but Trey Kelley scored nine of his 19 points in the final peri od as Houston Christian end ed first day play 1-1. In the other first-day game in the five-school boys’ bas ketball round robin event, Beaumont Kelly downed Little Cypress-Mauriceville for the second time in three days, this time by a score of 51-47. Adam Everist joined Kel ley with 19 points for the Mus tangs, while PNG’s Travis Thompson led all scorers with 21 points and teammate Matt Johnson scored 18. Houston Christian led by three, 64-61, with two minutes to play. Then the Mustangs went on an 8-0 run to lead by 11, 72-61, and put the game away. Earlier, Kris Richard led Ozen, 1-1, with 19 points and teammate Stephen Moton added 16 against Houston Christian. Kelley and Matt Hopeck each scored 10 for Houston Christian in the day’s opener. LCM, 0-2, trailed Kelly 27- 15 at halftime before staging a big second-half comeback. But better free-throw shoot ing would have lifted the Bears all the way back. They hit just 7 of 18 free throws in the sec ond half and 10 of 24 for the game. Kelly hit 6 of 9 freebies in the fourth quarter and was 10 for 13 for the game. Mason Moncia scored 24 points to lead Kelly and Matthew Pace added 12. Dallas Bean had 14 for LC-M, 12 of which came in the second half.
