RSVP Volunteers ActiveMiss Louise Knauer and Mrs. Howard Rockhill have retired from teaching but are still utilizing their skills and knowledge in working with children. They are the first RSVP volunteers in the library at M iller School.RSVP is the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Putnam County. The program’s purpose is to enrich the lives of older adults by giving them the opportunity to use their time and talents to help others in their community.M iss Knauer and Mrs. Rockhill are helping others be spending one morning each week to help PTA volunteers staff the Miller School Library. Among the assignments the RSVP volunteers undertake in the library are checking books in and out, shelving books, helping to find specific books, cataloguing books, preparation of displays, reading to the younger children, and suggesting books for use by older classes in research.In addition to her RSVP assignment, Miss Knauer, a first grade teacher for 25 years at Miller School, volunteers her time to the Putnam County Hospital Guild, makes toys for hospitalized children, and serves on the Gobin United Methodist Church WSCS Executive Board.Mrs. Rockhill, who taught second grade at Miller, contributes time to the Hospital Guild, is a reader for the preschool story hour at the Greencastle-Putnam County Public Library, and has worked in the Storeroom (clothing center in the courthouse). She has a second RSVP assignment on the days when she is not servingat Miller. That is registering participants in the Nutrition Program, which is a federally funded program providing reasonably priced, hot, noontime meals to persons over 60.The senior volunteer assignments were made through the cooperation of RSVP with Miller School Principal Burl Clark and PTA Library Chairman Mrs. Jay Dillinger.RSVP is open to all persons 60 and older. There are no educational or income restrictions. When it isneeded, RSVP arranges transportation for volunteers to and from the volunteer station where they serve. Accident insurance is provided free to the senior volunteers.RSVP-in-Putnam County is one of more than 600 locally sponsored and controlled RSVP’s throughout the United States. It is funded through a grant from the federal agency ACTION to the Putnam County Council on Aging and Aged. Provisions are made in the grant for a percentage of thefunding to be provided by the community. The program is staffed by Mrs. Suzanne Fornaro, Director, and Mrs. Thelma Burkhardt, Assistant Director.Putnam County RSVP staff work with non-profit agencies and organizations throughout the county to determine volunteer assignments that can use the talents and experience of senior volunteers.
