NEW CONCORD — Grid magi cian Ed Sherman had the last laugh. The ultra-capable strategist did a slow burn before the sea son opened when dopesters pick ed his Muskingum College team for no better than a fifth or sixth place finish in the tough Ohio Conference. Today, Sherman's’ Fighting Muskie edition, ‘young, battle scarred but triumphant, ranked with the top teams in the state. Saturday's 7-6 victory over host Mount Union in the mud earned the Sherman men a final 8-1 record, a mark duplicated by on ly Bluffton in Ohio this year. It also gave them undisputed possession of the runner-up slot in the final conference standings with a 6-1 record. OC titlist Wit tenberg finished with a perfect 6-0 record. It was largely a rebuilding sea son for Sherman, who lost most of his first and second string line corps from his 1957 team. But he molded his corps of re placements into one of the most formidable units in the state to move again into contention for the Ohio College Coach of the Year award he won several years ago. Dick Anderson's perfect place ment attempt in the second pe riod was the margin of victory in Saturday's game at Alliance. The Muskies, trailing 6-0 at the end of the first canto, thundered 64 yards in the second canto for and equalizing touchdown, mov ed out ahead on Anderson's con version, then utilized their bruis ing defensive play to keep the Raiders in check throughout the remainder of the contest. Playing under a drizzle of rain that turned the field into a sea of mud, the opponents shot most of their offensive fireworks in the first half then staged a punt ing duel in the final two periods The first automobile to use the steering column gear shift was the Benz in 1893. The Mounties thrust 72-yards for a touchdown on the opening kickoff, with a 15-yard pass from quarterback Davis to Ewing get ting the match off to a good start. The losers tallied on the 16th play of the drive with Davis dot ing over from the two with 8:10 left in the period. The all im portant conversion attempt fail ed. The Raiders threatened again after an exchange of punts but Muskingum defenders rose to the task ahead by holding for downs on their 18. Muskingum utilized 14 plays to score its lone touchdown of the game. New Philadelphia full back Bill “Cannonball” Cooper, carrying most of the offensive lead, finally bulled over from the one. Top rusher in the conference, Cooper added more yardage to his lead by picking up 109 yards in 25 carries. The loss gave the Mounties ' final 3-6 conference record.
