Seven Women of Tenderloin Arrested on Charges of VagrancyMAY BE SENT TO y! jail ninety daysDistrict Attorney Will Go Ahead With Prosecution If People DesireWith iUp arrest yesterday of seven habitues of the ml light district, on charge* of vagrancy, n crusade is on which may lend to the removal of this entire clenttn from the Globe district, if such a thing is possible.Failing to secure the dcsireil relief by proceeding under the territorial statue which prohibits any woman to occupy n house of ill repute within 40° yards of any public school, a number of residents living near the restricted district, headed by Miss Kittie Young, have secured counsel an.) commenced another fight under a different nectiou of the statutes.The arrests made yesterday were under section 899 of the penal code, commonly known as the “ vagrancy law, This section provides, among other things, that “every lewd nnd dissolute person who lives in and about houses of ill fame—is a vagrant nnd is punish able by imprison meat in the county jail not to exceed ninety days.”As the result, if this law is enforced, as it undoubtedly will be. the element at which this prosecutiou is aimed will be forced not only out of the presenl red light district but out of the eity and in all probability out of the entire Globe district.“If the people of this city wish to prosecute the habitues of the restricted district under the vagrancy statute. I will enforce that law to the letter,” said District Attorney Walter Shnteyes-crdtay.“Personally. Violet lloins. t'lnm Allen nnd three .Japanese women.They were arraigned yesterday, gave bond for m-i-ehrance, and will probably be tried Friday.Jt is understood that F. Jacob*-and J. W, Murphy will represent the mmplaining witness. Miss Kittie Young. The defendants will fight the case, but had not secured counsel yesterday.It I# possible that the city council may effect a compromise in this matter by extending the distance within which R disorderly liouso may lie located from a school house from -100 to 600 yards.If this action should Ik- taken, it would remove the restricted district from its present location nnd result in its being located in another section where it would probably cause no dissatisfaction.It is probable thnt this matter will be taken up by the council at tomor row night’s meetig.^Ji -n i
