HORNETS PLACE THIRD IN HIST.; BEAT NAVASOTA LAST FRIDAYIn a battle for third place in District 17AA, Caldwell edged past Navasota 12-6 last Friday night in Navasota. This gave the Hornets a season record of five wins, four losses and a tie lor the season. They ended district play with a record of two wins and two losses.Cameron won the district title with a record of 4-0, Giddings was second with 3-1, Caldwell, third with 2-2; Navasota, fourth with 1-3, and Hearne last with a record of 0-4.In last Friday night’s game in Navasota Caldwell got their first score late in the first period. Following a Navasota punt, Caldwell took over on the* Navasota 45 yard line. On the first play quarterback Dick Bowers passed seven yards to halfback Steven Kyles. On the next play, Kyles went over the left side of his line 38 yards for the touchdown. It took a real fine effort on the pail of Kyles, as he seemed to be stopped after a short gain, but showing a great deal of desire and determination, he broke loose, and went all the way to score. The try for point failed, and Caldwell led 6-0.On the second play of th“ second quarter, Caldwell added | Week their second six-pointer. The final seven yards were picked up on a pass from Dick Bowers to Steven Kyles for the TD. Caldwell had taken over on Navasota’s 24 yard line following a pass interception by Dick Bowers, who returned the ball 21 yards. The big gainer in the drive was an 18 yard run by Steven Kyles.Navasota came back strong in1!Fthe second half. Taking the second half kickoff, the Rattlers moved 63 yards for the score. Halfback Wally Coronado went over from two-yard out for the TD. The try for point was wide, and Caldwell still led 12-6.Navasota made their final bid tor victory early in the final period, moving to Caldwell’s 7 yard line. Here the Hornet defense dug in, and four plays later took over on their own 13.From this point, Caldwell began a drive of their own, moving to Navasota’s 21. All of this yardage was picked up on the ground by Kyles, Bowers, Ronnie Smith and Robert Ko-curek. Kocurek bad the longest gainer a 24-yardev.Fourteen CHS seniors played their final football game for the Orange ; i 1 White Friday night. They are Pete Alt.i more, Mike Baku..
