Fast-improving Bobby Johnson whipped par and Walter East combined Sunday at the Coro nado Golf Course to win the fourth annual Coronado Men’s Golf Club championship. Johnson fashioned a hot three under-par 69 round in the morn ing to grab a commanding 5-up lead and then played steady par golf for 11 more holes to close out East, 8 and 7, on the 29th green. Thus, Johnson who took up the game after the Coronado links opened four years ago, reached the top of the local amateur lad der and stamped himself as one of the most improved players in the entire county. Bobby dis placed Bill Pickford who did not defend his crown. In the first flight, Ralph Haught defeated Kim Kelley, 3 and 1, but Ed Patten and Bob Straub had a rougher time of it in disposing of Bob Brady and Max Leslie, respectively. Both matches went to the 19th hole in well-fought duels before Patten annexed the second flight title and Straub the third flight crown, Chippa Rogers edged past Art Blaisdell in the Fourth Flight and Don Jablonske nipped Phil Buck ley in the fifth flight. Rogers’ margin was 5 and 3 and Jablon ske’s win was by a 3 and 2 score in a close match. In the sixth flight, Joe Lowen thal defeated Lloyd Mitchell, 2 and 1, while Bill Hakes was win ning a tight duel with Bob Buell, 1-up, in the seventh flight. Hal (76) Hoffman, who has been playing less than six months, whipped out a 2 and 1 victory over Ralph Loesch to win the eighth flight crown and Jack Miller bumped off City Manager Race Wilt, 3 and 2, to win the ninth flight championship. Following the trophy presenta tions to the winners, the Coro nado Men’s Club Board of Di rectors hosted a barbecue for all players and their guests on the club house patio.
