MINNEAPOLIS#—Four Min neapolis area men have filed suit in Hennepin County district court to recover $50,000 report edly involved in a $12.5 million Cuban-American financial deal. The FBI acknowledged that its agents in several states are in vestigating to see whether fed eral law has been violated. The deal allegedly began near the end of the Batista regime in Cu ba in 1958 and involved purch ase of farm and industrial ma chinery, promising huge profits to investors. Bringing the suit are Elmer L. Semple, Allen Underhill, Carl Bartsch Jr. and Eugene Patter son. Named defendant in the ac tions is Carl Lidberg, Minneapo lis, one-time University of Min nesota and Green Bay Packer football player. Lidberg and Glen P. Bevan are identified as promoters of the deal in the Twin Cities, the pair allegedly representing Frank M Austin of Alexandria, Va. The court suits charge that Austin represented Batista and held purchare orders specifying power of the machinery to Cu a. Lidberg is alleged to have rep resented that Austin had a check for $12.5 million, made out on behalf of Batista. The Minneapolis Star quoted Austin as saying in Alexandria that he had returned the check to two Cuban trustees represent ing Batista shortly after Fidel Castro's rise to power and had not promoted the matter since. Austin said he had attempted to keep the deal alive in early 1959. The suits charge no profits have been made by the investors and that the original investments have not been returned, with Patterson claiming in addition that he has recently been solici ted for additional funds. The Minnesotans charge the solicitations were “false, fraudu lent and untrue.”
