THE BURLAP ROAD, The Massachusetts department of public works is interested in a test of a five mile stretch of bur lap or fabric lined roadway con structed in that state. A burlap road consists of the usual concrete bed, reinforced if necessary with steel, upon which a layer of burlap is laid and then the final coating of two inches of concrete poured on top. This burlap road is not to be confused with the cotton road ex perimented within the south. The cotton road consisted of the laying of a strip of cotton fabric where ever conditions permitted, upon which a coating of hard surfacing material was laid. If the ground underneath was of suitable compo sition, this made a serviceable roadway altho it would not stand up under heavy traffic. The fabric lined road is not an economy move. The road would be, except for the burlap lining, of the same specifications as other concrete roads. The advantage is that when a crack develops or the surface begins to disintegrate, it is much easier to repair the bur lap road since the top surface can be stripped away down to the bur lap with comparative ease and without injury to the heavy bed of cement below the lining. The matter of maintenance of hard surfaced roads will become an item worth considering in Ne braska as the mileage of paving increases. The Omaha- Lincoln road, for instance, is a high speed heavy traffic highway that will soon require repair even the new, because of the enormous amount of heavy, fast traffic it bears. If some method such as this, is perfected which will make main tenance reasonably easy and cheap, states which have a lot of paying yet in prospect will be interested. Gravel has proved expensive be cause of the high maintenance cost on heavily traveled stretches. Pavement should not be permitted to become too heavy a burden.
