Warriors to wrap up season FridayMiguel Vasconcellos/Irvine World NewsWoodbrige's Dan Oermann tries to avoid the tackle by Newport Harbor's ShahanBy Tim BurtIrvine World NewsWoodbridge High's football team won't be going to the CIF playoffs this year. But Coach Rick Gibson and his staff are treating Friday's game with Aliso Niguel on the road as a playoff game.I am expecting us to have a great week of practice, Gibson said Tuesday. This will be like our championship game for the seniors. We're not used to having our last game (of the regular season) be our last game.Gibson said that Woodbridge, which fell to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in league after a 35-14 loss to Newport Harbor last week, has remained focused during practices. That's a tribute to the young men, Gibson said. “My hats are off to all the all the young men on the team.Woodbridge caught Newport Harbor off-guard early in Thursday's Sea View League game.Instead of punting on the first possession, Gavin Hedstrom threw a pass to Ron Rommelfagner for a 6-yard gain, advancing the ball to the Sailors' 48-yard line. The Warriors then moved ahead when quarterback Tim Kegel connected with Zac Sagay on an 8-yard touchdown pass.We were a little flat-footed, and we came out a little unemotional, said Newport Harbor Coach Jeff Brinkley.Newport Harbor dominated the game after that, scoring 35 unanswered points. The last two games, we've come out and scored on two very good football teams, said Gibson. We're just giving up too many big plays defensively. Our youth is showing. It will help us in the future, but I feel sorry for our senior class that didn't want to go out this way.Newport Harbor tied the score, 7-7, when Dartangan Johnson hauled in aMouradyan.74-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Michael McDonald.Woodbridge fell behind 35-7 but closed the gap to 35-14 when back-up quarterback Mike Anderson connected with Dan Oermann on a 54-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.Anderson had a solid showing after coming on in the second half. He completed 4 of 8 passes for 102 yards with one interception.Kegel, the starter, completed 9 of 16 passes for 37 yards.Oermann was the Warriors' leadingrusher with 84 yards on 18 carries. He is closing in on 1,000 yards rushing for the season.Gibson said that Oermann and Kegel have continued to lead with their excellent attitudes despite the Warriors' long season.Johnson rushed for 132 yards on 22 carries while McDonald rushed for 104 yards on six carries for Newport Harbor. This week: Woodbridge (1-8, 0-4) at Aliso Niguel (3-6, 1-3) Friday at 7 p.m. at Aliso Niguel.
