PAGE 2 A MIDCOUNTY CHRONICLE-REVIEW WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14,Environment Or Energy?Senator Lloyd Bentsen of Texas made a good point in discussing the energy crisis with the news media recently. The state's junior senator pointed out that burocracy should shoulder much of the blame. He cited the lack of exploration of public land due to the failure of the government to sell leases. As a side feature to this, Bentsen noted the last public land leases which were sold brought more than $2 million to the federal treasury. What Bentsen did not call attention to, was the way congress is likely responsible for the situation. Although we hasten to add the Senator himself is not a contributing factor to the depolorable problem.Elected officials, in particular the members of congress, have been gung ho in listening and responding to every weird quirk consumerists and environmentalists dream up. One of the most dramatic examples being that of the north slope discovery in Alaska. This field is reportedly rich enough to supply the world's needs, independent of Arabian oil for generations. And what has been done since ARCO, nee Sinclair, started thingsup there? Not near enough. The environmentalists screamed and hollered about messing up the tundra with a nasty old pipe line. The tundra aids the environment by a alternately producing ice and mud.Right then and there, Congress, if it had been alert to anything other than thesqueeking wheel, would have passed the necessary legislation to leave the petrochemical companies free to get the oil to the proper places Instead, they listened to those who would hold Save the Earth meetings in V^asjiington D.C. and leave the streets littered with sacks of garbage. Congress avoided the type laws which would have prevented senile Associate Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas from issuing stay orders which have stayed us right into an enormous crisis. We agree with Senator Bentsen that burocrats have been lax in selling exploratory (eases on public land, but we urge Senator Bentsen, indeed all of congress to pay some attention to the needs of this nation, not just the complaints of the minutest of minorities.r
