Having completed the eleven miles of third track between Earlville and Mendota and a three mile stretch west of the last named city, the Chi- CAZO, Burlington and Quincy rail way began work last week on a fourth track between Downers Grove and Eola, a distance of 12% miles. The project will cost $1,075,000. Paley, Bros., of St. Paul are the contractors and work was begun at the Downers Grove end. According to the Aurora Beacon News, «a “unique method of train operation is that between Aurora and Mendota. When a passenger train approaches a freight train from behind, the freight in stead of aidetracking and waiting for the passenger to pass, crosses to the left and continues on the double track to the left. When the pas senger train has gone ahead the freight crosses to the right and con tinues on the same track as before Collisions are prevented through the system. ‘The system is being extend ed to Galesburg. New equipment recently authoriz ed will include 500 automobile freight cars, 600 flat cars, 800 hopper coal cars, 10 baggage cars, 14 steel su burban coaches, 10 gas-electric cars, eight mikado freight engines and five passenger locomotives.
