One of the contributing factors to Abilene’s growth has been the Abilene Southern Railway. This line runs from Abilene to Balling er, a distance of 54.72 miles. An other section runs from Hamlin to Anson, a distance of 17.41 miles. Work on the Abilene to Ballinger line was begun in December 1908 and completed December 10, 1910. Work on the Anson-Hamlin branch was begun in May 1910 and com pleted October 1, 1910. The com pany also has trackage rights over the Wichita Valley road from Abi lene to Hamlin. From the start the road has met the especial needs of the section through which it runs. It has en joyed good patronage and steady growth since the first engine was run over its lines and today is an important link in Abilene's rail connections.
