Our friend Philip Hambsch of Strahan is expected home almost any day now if he is not already here. He left Germany some time ago and land ed in New York Nov. 6 but is visiting friends in Illinois while en route home Philip evidently met a reporter when he landed at New York as the append ed clipping from the Chicago Daily News of Nov. 7 would indicate Whether or not he told these things by the reporter we will leave for Mr. Hambsch to say when you see him. We are all glad that he had a nice trip and arrived safely home. New York. Nov. 6.—A modern Rip Van “Winkle stepped ashore to-day from the North German Lloyd steam ship ‘Trave from Bermen in the person ‘of Phillip Hambach, who fought in the 1 83a Titinoia during the war and whose home’is in Malvern, Iowa. Hambach is “going on 80 acres’, and went abroad to Germany last August for the first time in nearly half a century. He went a sleep one day nearly fifty years ago while seeing some friends off to America and made an involun tary passage on the ship on which he went to sleep. hisnap kept him from his old home for fifty years. When he returned to Obenhausen-on-the- Rhine he found all his old time friends either dead or so old as to have for gotten young Phillip Hambsoh. At least they did not recognize in Phillip, with the grizzled beard and the bent form, the former athletic young Teuton they had known in their childhoo days. The only one who recognized him was a woman who said she was his boyhood sweetheart. She had married and has a large family. After look ing over the old place Phillip, who has a family and has prospered in Town, started home. He took a train immediately for Chicago over the New York Central and they will make con nection there for his home in Malvern.
