Finus Atwood, 23, employe of the Delta Tank Manufacturing Co., Inc and former serviceman, was drowned in the Illinois river at 1.30 o'clock Sunday afternoon when a passing cruiser swamped the motorboat of Atwood and two other duck hunters. The accident occurred near the A867 highway bridge With Atwood were a brother, Jesse, 11, and Don Friday, 30, of Macomb They were returning to Beardstown after duck hunting. Young Atwood and Friday clung to the side of the boat until rescued S ainus Atwood, who was re portedly an excellent swimmer, sank to the bottom of the river The body was recovered at 5 20 p.m Sunday, about 100 yards from the Cass county shore Atwood’s mother, Mrs George Atwood said her son's drowning was the third to occur in the family A brother, George, drown ed at Winchester in 1934, and an uncle drowned several years earlier . Cass County Coroner Joe Lint ner will conduct an inquest at 720 o'clock Wednesday night at the city hall Deputy Coroner Paul Harrison will assist. Atwoods body was recovered by Harvey Pate, Albert Franks, Jake Swan Charles and Ray Walls. There were more than 50 en gaged in the search and volunteers expressed appreciation to Betty Logsdon in furnishing equipment and to the Havana Rides who brought equipment with them. Finus Fremont Atwood who re sided at 1218 East Ninth street was born at Winchester, DL, on March 30, 1933, son of George and Pearl Atwood. He moved to Beardstown in 1951 and was married to Helen. Friday June 11, 1954 He is survived by his wife and one daughter, a stepson, Donald Wilson Friday, his parents who reside at 1406 East Ninth street: five brothers, Norris, Clayton, Benjamin, Jesse and Rowens, all of Beardstown,,and four sisters, Mrs. Elsie Clark of Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Elizabeth Dowsett of Ashland, Mrs. Dollie Mobley of Chicago Heights and Miss Kappa Atwood at home One brother and one sister pre ceded him in death. The body was taken from the Cline Funeral home to the par ents’ home at 1406 East Ninth street today Funeral services will be held at 230 o'clock Thursday afternoon. at the Cline Funeral Home The Rev Lottie Morrow will of ficiate at the services and the American Legion will be in charge of the graveakie services at the cemetery Atwood was in service from April 17 1953 to February 2 1954, sta tioned at Ft. Lewis, Washington and was in the Reserves following his discharge
