sive.James Flynn, manager of the Cooperative Store in this city, declared that the new tariff established by the Alaska Steamship Company discriminated against the smaller merchants, and intruduced way bills in support of his testimony. He stated that the company gave the canneries a rate of $6 per ton while local merchants were compelled to pay $14 per ton for the same merchandise. He also stated that cooling room charges were levied by the steamship companies on shipments of perishables which were never placed in the cooling room but carried on deck. William Clay-eon, a clothing merchant here, also introduced freight bills to show excessive freight rates.Attorney O. P. Hubbard of Valdez also appeared before the commissioner in behalf of oertaln Valdes merchants and testified that excessive freight and wharfage charges prevailed at that place.Examiner Wilson, Judge Wicker-sham and the attorneys left for Juneau on the Northwester! yesterday, where the hearing will be continued, and later a further hearing will be had at Seattle.
