Exploration or Palestine. jLieut. Gonder, of the British Pales* j tine Exploration Expedition, has sent I home a report of the progress of the j survey under his direction, which pre- i seats the following account of woik ac- ! complished during the present year: j In February a triangclatioa of 830 square mlies of the desert west of the I) rad Sea was made. In the nest three months, nearly the whole of Philistia was surveyed. In June and July, the expedition was at work in Galilee, when they were attacked at Safed, and their 1 labors temporarily broken off. They j had, however, at that time, completed j the survey of ISO miles, and worked np • 20 of the 30 miles, coruposieg the line | of levels from the Mediterranean to the j Sea of Galilee. jAmong the discoveries of especial interest to the Biblical student are those of the supposed sites of Adullam, Serar } Makhedah, and Csaa of Galilee. “In j Jerusalem,” runs the report, “Lieut, j Cinder was so fortunate as to find the Axnerie, the crusadlDg inn for pilgrims. It lies close to ths grotto of Jeremiah, and is now partly excavated, showing long lines of mangers. At Rabins, he discovered that nearly the whole of the door and foundations of the early church built over Jacob's Well exist still, hidden by modem vaults. At Shefa Arar, a magnificent sepulchre has been fouad, with elaborate ornamental work. The present church there proves to be built ©a foundations older than the Latin occupation. At Knorbet - Rumah, a site of great medieval interest, a rude Jewish tomb was found near the mouth \ of a large cave. This corresponds with the story of an early Jewish traveler, that at Rumah were to be seen the sepulchre of Benjamin, and a cave near it whence the Messiah was expected to appear.”Intelligence from Lieut. Conder, dated Aug. 12, related that he was still at Alt. Carmel, awaiting cincial investigation | into the outrage at Safed. It is believed | that six months' work will complete the j survey of Western Palestine. I
