WJrHG MEETING.Tlic Wh g citizens of the counties of Iotta smtl Gran r are requested to attend a mass wtieliajj at Belmont, on Saturday, the 6th day of November inst. for the purpose of suggesting some course for tl:e action of the citizens of the the whole Territory, -which shall be deemed the most effectual in procuring the removal of James Dcank Doty from the o Tice of Governor cf this Territory-•signed, in calling the attention of their fel ow- citizens to some action for the re mo vs .1 of an odious and unprincipled man from the most important office in the Tenitory, would remark, that, it is scarcely necessary for them to advert to the feeling ol indignat on with which She announcement of the appointment of tliat individual was received by all parties in Wisconsin. Our oppoi ents saw, with those feelings of contempt with which treason and desertion are ever viewed, that a deseiter from their ranks had jeen rewarded for his treason by an appointment to the highest and most honorable .station in the government of the Territory, ind the Whigs saw, with vexation and re grel, that the man, who was then and is at th s lime a public defaulter, notorious for his selfishness and dishonesty, an eleventh-hour Whig, had been selected by the Whig administration of the General Government as the leader of Whig principles in Wisconsin.Howevc' willing we as Whigs may be, for the pub ic good, to compromise our individual opinions to produce harmony, the result oft ho recent election has shown that the appointment of this dishonest Judge unprincipled lawyer, peculating public agent, .iclhsh delegate, public clelauUcr, speculator with the public money, and political traitor would not ie entertained. We nevertheless caterer into the contest with this incubus on our shoulders, not doubling until the last ino nentthat there was a redeeming power in the Senate of the United States that would, before the conics) was out, be exerted to i id us of the dead weight we were carrying. In that hope we were disappointed, and the result of the election has settled this point, that, so long as James fittav.e Jjoty is Governor of'Wisconsin, the Whigs cannot contend with success as a political party. Th s position can be demonstrated by the vote; polled in ilifierenl counties for county officers, where those results will show that tbe Whigs, if united, had suffi-e ienl strength to hav e elected their candidate to the delegacy; yet we hare sustained ccl an almo; I Waterloo defeat, and that defeat we unhesitatingly attribute to the unpopularity aru designs of Doty.Wo are well assured that, nearly up to the day of 1. ic election, Mr. Arnold’s prospects in the counties east of Madison were highly flattering, and not a doubt was entertained, hut that m those counties, ho would get c handsome majority. But, on Friday previous to the election a steamboat arrived at IV ihvaukee with the intelligence that the nomination of Doty had been confirmed by th 3 Senate. Expre ises were im-mctiialely despatched through the adjoining counties wit i this death-blow- to the Whigs, and our cau ;e was doubly lost! Tpe opposition papers and party, availing themselves of the oiliousness of Doty’s name and character, charged Mr. Arnold with being his creature; asserting that if he was elected no rteps would be taken for his removal. If they had c largccl him with being the veritable Benecfict Arnold himself they could not more electuolly have destroyed his prospects. Many of the Whig party, tooctedulously believing these assertions, traversed the X srritory and used every effort to secure the election of General Dodge, believing that thereby the services of a Delegate would le secured, whose avowed enmity to Do y was a sure guarantee that every energy would be put in requisition to effect 1 iis ren iov al.Wc wish it to be distinctly understood, that these rei racks are not made by us as a reflection on he course pursued by many of our Whig 1 rethem. Wc believe they sincerely supposed that they were pursuing the proper ccurse to rid the Territory of a di-shenest man, who bad crept into office contrary to tie wishes of the people; and although they may hereafter deprecate the course they have pursued to attain the wished-for end, yet we honor the motives that would net sacrifice honesty of intention to party feeli ig. At the same time these • worthy Whigs will learn with regret that they could not have acted more in con-sonancQ with the views of Doty than by cas-tlieir vo cs for, and electing his avow-election o'hi: bitter »t personal enemy, and poliiicil opj onen# f the admmistration of the Genes.al CoV' ment, than, he could have do ie from ■$« flection of an honest Whig. ;In these view we oncur with him; and, sincerely I elii yig tl at every effort will be made bj toe £ ege.1 i elected to obtain the remor al of oclt; £0 no oriously obnoxious to all parlies ■ bit we c restion his ability (for the reason; forth”) to effect an end “so devoutly to ft w ishc I,” without the aid of the Whigs 'Y'scoi sin.
