Why the Fence Post?It's been described as an ugiy trophy, one some have joked is riddled with ter*But the players who battle each year for the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy covet the trophy, which no one can argue is pretty unique.Each year, when the winning team is about to receive the Fence Post, the players roar their approval and oftentimes kiss the trophy. Some of the Woodbridge players did just that Friday night after the Warriors took home the trophy for the second consecutive year.The trophy Is given to the Irvine public school team, with the best record against other city squads. The trophy is kept at the winning school for a year.The Fence Post is based on games between the Irvine teams, and five of the six Pacific Coast League schools are from Irvine. Beckman, in Irvine but part of the Tustin Unified School District, is included.The Fence Post, selected to reflect Irvine's ranching history in 1978, is named in honor of the late youth football coach Dennis Toohey, who died of cancer at the age of 56 on Nov. 2.1990.-Tim Burt
