Y.—Introduc tory to the appearance of Mayor Walker at the exercises on “May ors Night,” which marked the closing of the opening week cere monies at the new Wazerene Congregational Church, Grand avenue and Lefferts place, Rev. Hugh H. Proctor, pastor said: “We, of course, do not know what the Mayor will speak about, but no doubt he will touch on that report from Italy.’ “If myself do not beleve it is true, put that it was a false story circu lated to misrepresent amor; the Negroes. The Mayor is very popular among us. We like him because of his democratic touch, because he is Mayor of all the people. And we will be glad to hear from his own lips that the story is @ saward.” Mayor Walker's speech when he appeared, on the rostrum opened with this statement: “My American ism was challenged in that anony mous cable from Europe last sum mer, and that made me angry. I have a thorough belief in the Amer icanism of you people,” he contin ued, “and no one who sends a cable across the ocean cary make me dis believe it. After seventeen yars as a servant of New York State and a loyal upholder of the Declaration of Independence, it seems strange that my standpoint should be doubted as 4, still seems to be by some in the Harlem section of Manhattan.” . The story referred to alleged that Mayor Walker left a night club in Rome on his recent European trip because he objected to the presence of some Negro males in company with white women and dancing with them. The story according to the Mayor was news to him until he had been out on the ocean three days homeward bound. The beauty of Rome he claimed has given him no time to visit local night clubs. AN Men Equal In conclusion the Mayor said: “I firmly believe in the Declaration of Independence, which states that if men are created equal. Then should I who 42m known as the father of the Workman's Compensation, the Child Welfare, and the Widow's Pension laws, and wrote into the state-law what is known to us as the Yankee Ku Klux Klan Bill, 1 be piloried without reason? It is not easy to make the public the enemy of a champion and friend of seven teen years standing on the basis of an anonymous story.” Other speakers were: Rev..E. FE. Church. .Prof. J. H.
