Page Chapman, Colored, Shot by Gun in Hands of Sam Jenkins. 'N DIGGS’ STORE, HOPELAND Dead Man One of Party, Who Had Gone Hunting on First Day of Sea son—Part of Heart Torn Out and Several Ribs Shattered by Bullets. Frederick county had tts first hunt ing accident of the present season on Saturday afternoon, when Page Chap man, colored, aged about 22 years, was shot and instantly killed by Sam Jenkins, also colored. The shooting took place in the store of Edgar Diggs, colored, at Hopeland, near Ur bana, and was entirely accidental. Chapman was in all probablity killed by his own shell, having been seen to have a yellow Winchester shell in his hand while examining a single barrel shot gun which was af terwards passed around among the crowd until it reached Jenkins. Chap man was the only one in the party having shells that color. Chapman formed one of the party of negroes who had gone hunting on Saturday, the first day of the season. He was a son of Page Chapman, and is survived by his father and mother Hie was the only child. In the morn ing Chapman his father to al low him to go hunting. The father declared he would rather for the son to help in corn husking for a part of the day, but finally agreed to leave the son have the day off. In the af ternoon the party returned to the Diggs store, , There a single barrel gun was pass ed around among different members of the party, Who Were discussing its weight. Over near the store door Chapman was seen to “break” the gun and a yellow shell was in his hand. It is supposed that he slip ped this shell into the barrel, and forgetting It was there, passed It around to other members of the party Chapman walked over and sat down on a box while the gun finally got in Jenkins' hands. The latter was also sitting down, opposite Chapman, with th gun across his knees he began to pull the hammer back and when half way it slipped from his fingers, striking the shell, causing it to explode. “My God , Chapman yelled, and fell from the box, with a large hole torn in his left breast and blood pouring from the wound. He died instantly. The negroes were terror stricken but some of them ran to the Chapman home, a short dis tance away and notified the family. Dr. T. C. Boutson was summoned from Buckeystown, and State’ Attorney Anders, Justice August T. Prust and Deputy Sheriff Gouker went out from Frederick. After taking the seat, many of the witnesses it was. Avcided that an inquest was uonnecessary, the hooting being accidental. Aly Mm the party were sober ‘and had had no w ords. The load of shot entered Chapman’s left breast tearing out part of the heart, a part of one Tong and shattering two or three ribs. Th ead lodged against the backbone. Lula Bowings, colored, who was in the store at the time of the shooting having gone there to make some pur poses. Was next to Chapman when he was shot and narrowly escaped 1 jury. Chapman was given a good repu tation by residents in the community he was at one time employed in the city.
