By John Tompkins ANGLETON — A former Surfside Beach business owner was found laying on the beach, his bloodied head fac ing the water and his feet pointing toward the dunes. Brazoria County crime scene investigators Monday described the beach where witnesses found the bloodied, beaten body of George Smith. Investi gators also testified Smith’s body was near a public access pint to the ead and there were too many tire tracks near the body to determine if any belonged to a potential suspect. “I saw a white male laying on the ground,” for mer identifi cation officer Jeff Bevers said. “He had severe trauma to his head. He was covered in blood.” The investigators testified Monday in the capital murder trial for Dylan James Laughrey, 25, who is accused of being paid to kill Smith on Aug. 6, 2007. Prosecutors believe the vic tim’s wife, Margaret Lorraine Smith, paid Laughrey to kill George Smith and leaving his body on the beach. Margaret Smith awaits trial in February on a capital mur der charge. Margaret Smith and Laughrey both face life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty. Bevers also testified Monday he found blood spatter several feet away from the scene, though he could not say how it got there. It was tested for DNA, as was a beer bottle found near the body, he said. See TRIAL, Page 3A “I saw a white male laying on the ground. He had severe trauma to his head.” Jeff Bevers, investigator
