By DON PATTERSON Medicine Hat News Today is a day for people to recognize the sacrifices made by veterans and their fallen comrades, says John Reynolds, chair of the Remembrance Day committee at Robertson Memorial Branch 17 Royal Canadian Legion. “It is essential we remember those who have given their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy today,” said Reynolds. Remembrance events begin at 10 a.m. with a memorial service at the Legion. After the service, veterans, guests, and the public will parade to Riverside Park. At 11 a.m. there will be two minutes of silence in honor of those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom. According to Reynolds, members from the South Alberta Lighthorse Militia Regiment will fire a salute. As well, servicemen from CFB Suffield and BATUS will attend. Reynolds added Medicine Hat MP. Monte Solberg, Medicine Hat MLA, Rob Renner, Mayor Garth Vallely, and other dignitaries will lay wreaths at the cenotaph. Reynolds is proud of the Medicine Hat community's support for Remembrance days activities, “The turn-out has been getting bigger each year,” he said. Over 20,000 poppies have been distributed for Hatters to wear as a symbol of their remembrance. “We wear a poppy to remember the fallen comrades,” said Annetta Lozo, branch poppy chair. “They gave their lives to give us the freedom we have today.” The poppy pin represents the thousands that grow on Flanders fields where so many of those who lost their lives fighting for our freedom are buried. Poppies have been distributed free to local schools, said Lozo, to educate young people about the price of freedom, “We want the children to learn to remember too,” she said. Lozo said money donated for poppies will be used to purchase medical equipment for veterans. She added $12,000 was donated to the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital Foundation last year.
