The critical evidence was the damaged section of the Firestation door whichpurportedly had blue paint from the car that was alleged to have hit the door. The damaged panel had been disassembled bythe damaged panels were left in the Firestation, but could notbe found for the hearing. Terry Harben was alleged to have driven his car into the firestation door on election night, which prevented the door from opening to respond to the burning of a house owned by my family. The house burners also shot my mare with buckshot. I am offering a thousand dollars for evidence that will convict the arsonists and horse-shooters, or “whoever” hit the firestation door intending to block it.THAT thanks are due to Sheriff-elect John Davis and Sheriff Roy Helton, and others, who helped pull those people off of me outside the courtroomafter the hearing? I couldn’t see who was hitting and kicking me while I was down on the floor.John held my glasses for me and helped pull some of them off. . .Sheriff Helton couldn’tidentify who they were because he said he was too busy holding the rest of them off. Guess aperson isn't safe in the Courthouse anymore.THAT City Policeman Jim Howington was the officer who responded and investigated theLdamage to the Firestation door on Tuesday night? Wednesdaynight, Commissioner Harbenand Sheriff-elect John Davismet with the City Council to discuss whether or not to continue a City Police or have the position filled by a Sheriff s Deputy next year.THAT, on October 6, 1976,the City Council approved reduction of the City beer license from $1,000 to $750 for 1977? Upon the request of Mr. Russ Wallace, “Pete” Gilleland moved for the reduction, Hubert Smith seconded themotion, and it passed unanimously. Seems like the city will lose at least $1,000 in fees. Youyourshould attend the City Council meeting and express approval or disapproval.THAT a State Forestry truck crashed into the Etowah Riverwhen the Thompson Bridge (on the dirt road leading past Hugh Stowers place) failed? Was the cause of the failure found to bewashed out footings on one end? How often does the County Commissioner inspect the bridges on the school bus routes? Or if he is notcompetent to inspect them, does he have someone else inspect them? It’s a good thing that it wasn’t the loaded school busthat crashed into the river.THAT four years is too long to wait? It is the duty of the Grand Jury to insure that public officers are accountable to the citizens. Let’s hope they will do their duty competently.George DavidJ. R.
