Funeral services for Dr J H. Hamblen, 93, of Abilene founder and general superin tendent emeritus of the Evan gelical Methodist Church and former Stamford pastor, were held at 2 pm. Tuesday there Dr. Hamblen’s first charge in the Northwest Texas Meth odist’ Conference, after trans ferring from East Texas in November of 1909, was Ward Memorial, mission church at that time in Stamford Dr Ralph’ AW Vanderwood general superintendent of the Evangelical Methodist Church, officiated for the services Burial was in Elmwood Memo rial Park under the direction of Elliott’s Funeral Home Grandsons served as pallbear er. At age 90 Dr. Hamblen wrote his autobiography “A Lock Into Life’, which traces his life and motivations behind his decisions. In 1950 Dr. Hamblen was presented with an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Bob Jones University — in Greenville, S. C. Dr. Hamblen was born Nov 13, 1877, in Kaufman County the son of John and Matilda Hamblen, a farm couple. Dec. 9, 1900, in Canton, Van Zant County, the Methodist preacher married Alvin Earn est Willims. She died Jan. 31, 1958. Jan. 2, 1959, he married Irma Blanche Hamilton in Abilene Dr. Hamblen served North west Conference churches in Tuxedo, Knox City, O’Brien, Hamlin, Crowell, Stamford, Clarendon, Abilene, Sweetwa ter and Vernon. After 40 years of preaching, Dr. Hamblen withdrew from the Methodist Church , and founded the Evangelical Meth odist Church in Abilene in 1945. Survivors are his wife of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Roy Ricks of San Bernardino, Calif., and Mrs. Walter Ander so of Monrovia, Calif.; four sons, A. K. Hamblen of Kil leen, songwriter Stuart Ham blen of Hollywood, Calif., J. FE. Hamblen of Dallas and Dr. J. H. Hamblen of Snyder, one brother, Joe Hamblen of Can ton; four step-children, T. L. Hamilton Jr. of the home, Ed ward H. Hamilton of 609 Lex ington, Mrs. Bailey Hill of Sil verton, Mrs. Bryan Gilliam of Junction; and numerous grandchildren.
