Swect-land.Building Frame StructureThe first church building was a frame structure on the corner of East Normal and Oak streets where the Ilays Protestant hospital now stands. It was later veneered with brick and enlarged and served as a meeting place until 1924 when the present structure on West Seventh street was occupied.The organization of the church includes the Epworth League, AidSociety and the Missionary' Society.The church has under its auspices Wesley Hall, a dormitory for women who are attending the Hays State Teachers College and the Hays Protestant Hospital.The Tholen Jewelry Co., had its beginning on a farm near Victoria back in 1895, when Henry Tholen started repairing watches for the neighbors.In 190G, after the son Herman J. had finished a course in watchmaking at Kansas City, Henry built a store at Victoria. In 191.7 Tholens moved to Hays and erected the present modern building, 25x00, and until Henry’s death in 1918 the firm name was Henry Tholen Son.Herman bought the St. Aubyn Jewelry Store at Russell, October, 1925 and December 81, 1920, the two stores—Hays and Russell— were incorporated under the name of The Tholen Jewelry Co., with Herman J. Tholen as president. Other members of the firm are B. M. Kuhn and W. D. Dreiling. Mr. Kuhn has been with Mr, Tholen for ten years and Mr. Dreiling for nine years. Mr. Dreiling has been the manager of the Russell store since it was purchased by Mr. Tholen in 1925.Business has increased steadily during*’the years, Mr. Tholen says, and customers come from more than a hundred miles, today, to trade with the Tholen Jewelry Co. Mr. Tholen operates an optical department in connection with the jewelry store.Jacobs was born at Pfeifer, Russia and went to Brazil in 1870. From there he came to Ellis couny three years later. When only 23 years old Mr. Jacobs was elected county clerk of Ellis county and held different county offices over a long period of years. He also served on the city council for three years. He entered the Citizen’s State Bank as assistant cashier and finally became vice-president of the isntitution.tfA “SURPRlSf” OIL WELLSaturday, January 28, 1926, a“surprise” oil well came in for 1500 barrels on the farm of J. It waijA* ■TiTii'Hi mi i -i i '■ -CITIZEN’5 BANK CLOSEDWednesday, November 10, the Citizen’s State Bank closed it’s doors together with the Ellsworth State Bank and the Farmer's State Bank of Walker. All three banks were under control of the C. G. Cochran estate. The Citizens bank was organized 20 years before its failure by J. H. Penny, C. M. Wann, and the late J. H. Ward. It was sold in 1913 to the late C, G. Cochran who was its president until his death. Nov. 25 E. M. Speer was appointed assistant receiver of the failed bank.DEATH C. G. COCHRANC. -G. Cochran, veteran banker and stockman died Sunday, May 30, 1926 at his home of apoplexy. Mr. Cochran lived in Rooks County until 1912 when he came to Hays and bought the Citizen’s State Bank of which he was president at the time of his death.. His funeral was one of the largest ever held in Hays.TT-r
